On a busy Thursday evening, we were nestled in a cosy spot near the back. The place has an intimate and friendly vibe, bundled along with tons of character and taxidermied heads to boot.
A quick glance at the menu tells us why K&B is full of hustle and bustle! Deep fried naughtiness all to be washed down by over 33 beers on offer (30 taps and 3 hand pumps). After some frenzied debating, we started with a round of the ‘Beer of the Week’, Get Folked! by Merchant Brewing Co. – a slightly creamy and mildly crisp English Best Bitter.
Half a glass down we tucked into K&B’s ‘must try’ dish, Lasagna Spring Rolls ($11). Not sure if these are quite Southern American inspired, but surprisingly delicious. Definitely one worth trying!
My partner in crime had the ‘Sir Lion’, grass-fed sirloin on a pool of cauliflower puree, sticky sage jus and parmesan crumbed artichoke heart ($24) (she reckons herself fancy). The steak was requested rare but missed the mark, although the puree and artichoke heart came up a big fat YES!
I chose the Sticky Pork Belly Burger, slow-cooked pork belly in K&B’s own chipotle BBQ sauce, with an apple and cayenne chilli slaw and aioli in a milk bun with chips ($16). I was really looking forward to this, but didn’t quite live up to expectations. The slaw was tasty and I’m always a fan of hand cut chips, however, the culprit was a dry and chewy slow-cooked pork belly.
We washed it all down with two more solid ales, Panhead – The Vandal NZ IPA and Ironbridge CoCo Hops American IPA.
Keg and Brew has a lot of potential. Whilst the food needs some small improvements, the atmosphere goes hand in hand with a sound choice of craft beers.
