Dead Ringer – Surry Hills, Sydney

Grilled lamb, yoghurt, marinated onion & herbs ($34)

One of our local favourites its definitely DEAD RINGERIt’s just up the road from us on Bourke Street in Surry Hills, really close to Taylor Square! One of the reasons it’s on our favourites list is because the menu changes all the time. This means you can keep going back and trying out new dishes! Another thing we love about the menu is how creative it is… you just need to look at the ingredients in each dish and how it’s been put together!

Stretched curds, olive marmalade, heirloom tomatoes ($19)

Bonito Tataki, cucumber, karkalla, black sesame ($18)

We started with a couple of smaller dishes. I think the Stretched curds, olive marmalade, heirloom tomatoes ($19) was pretty much like a burrata. Really great staple dish that can’t really go wrong. I also love the extra surprise of toasted oats on top! It added a crunchy element to the whole dish which was quite unexpected. The waitress recommended the Bonito Tataki, cucumber, karkalla, black sesame ($18) which is not a dish we’d usually order. In my mind (and maybe others will agree too) bonito is a very ‘fishy’ fish. I prefer my fish more gamey, like tuna! This was a pleasant surprise though and definitely had a Japanese element to it. The portion was also pretty generous for an entree!

Bonito Tataki, cucumber, karkalla, black sesame ($18)

Grilled lamb, yoghurt, marinated onion & herbs ($34)

Orecchiette, pine forest mushrooms, thyme and pine nut ($25)

Purple sapphire potato, kimchi, soft egg ($12)

Next up we ordered two mains and a side to share. As you can see, there are dishes at different prices ranges so I think this place really caters to many people. The Grilled lamb, yoghurt, marinated onion & herbs ($34) was delicious! Really warming, wintery dish. To balance it out we had the vegetarian pasta Orecchiette, pine forest mushrooms, thyme and pine nut ($25)It was actually quite funny because the chef had initially forgotten to add the pine nuts! So he ran out with a little bowl of them and sprinkled them on top in front of us!

There were a couple of sides to choose from but the Purple sapphire potato, kimchi, soft egg ($12) caught my interest. I had never really had purple potato before so we thought we’d give it a go! The kimchi element isn’t really spicy at all and, like with the bonito, we could see the Asian influence here. I had been to DEAD RINGERa few times before but never noticed this Asian influence! Maybe the chef is trying out something new. I’m looking forward to going back again soon to see what else they’ve come up with. Oh, and they’re also open for brunch (which I highly recommend!).
