I don’t always visit new restaurants. In fact, there’s a whole selection of restaurants we go back to a lot – Bar Brosé was one of them (still mourning that loss). Another one is MS G’S, Merivale’s fun Asian-fusion joint in Potts Point. Every time our dear friend M comes to visit us in Sydney, we go there because it’s her favourite. And you know what, MS G’S always delivers! We always have the best time and this time was no different.

We’re not big drinkers (I actually don’t drink at all) so we love a restaurant that has good mocktails. We both got the Pink Panther – Homemade rhubarb-ginger syrup, lemon, rose, coconut water, soda ($9.50). The fun thing is that you can always add pearls to your drink, like at those Asian tea places!
A MS G’S classic is the Cheeseburger spring roll ($6 each). I have no idea how Dan Hong did it (although I do know he’s a genius, he cooked for our wedding) but this spring roll literally tastes like a cheeseburger. It’s absolutely ridiculous. It’s not just a gimmick, you need to try this for yourself.

The menu is divided into smaller and larger dishes, which is helpful when you’re trying to determine how much to order. The Burrata, ‘strange flavour style’ sesame sauce, chilli oil, spinach and peanuts ($22) was one of the smaller dishes. I just love how this dish looks, I think it’s the contrast of the red-tones of the sauce on the blue bowl. This is one of those dishes where you’re not quite sure what you’re eating (don’t ask what the ‘strange flavour’ is…) but it’s just amazing and so you don’t care. Highly recommend getting this – then get some rice so you can pour the rest of the sauce over it and enjoy.
Another seriously moorish dish is the Tom yum fried rice, snow crab, kaffir lime, crispy wonton skin ($29). If crab in fried rice seems decadent – it is. But get it, because you know, YOLO.

Don’t forget to eat your greens! The BBQ choy sum, fermented chilli dressing (without for us), crunchy bits ($16) is delicious and so simple. You can really taste the BBQ in the flavour and the crunchy bits are actually tiny, tiny rice puffs. Our big meat dish for the night was the Charcoal grilled Angus short rib, beetroot kimchi, ssamjang, leaves ($48). This is SO delicious and you’re supposed to wrap the meat in the betel leaves. We cheated and didn’t do that, mainly because we don’t really like the taste of the leaves. This is the type of meat that just melts in your mouth, it’s making me drool just thinking about it.

Time for dessert! Desserts at MS G’S are always ridiculously creative and fun. The Stoner’s Delight has been part of the menu since day 1 and I’m proud to say I’ve had both part 1 and part 2 – now it was time for part 3! Stoner’s Delight Part 3 consisted of Doughnut ice cream, peanut dulce de leche, peanut & pretzel brittle, crispy bacon, mars bar brownie, raspberry curd, potato chips & deep fried nutella ($18). Honestly, this is way too much to eat on your own. Having said that, though, I do remember part 1 and 2 being bigger then part 3…not sure if the sizes really have changed. There are also so many rich flavours that you can’t really tell what’s what. It’s all sickeningly sweet but you can’t help digging your spoon in again and again for more.
To balance that out, we got the Hong-Kongo Bongo – yakult sorbet, green apple granita, coconut mousse, melon ($16). I was really curious about the yakult sorbet, having grown up religiously drinking yakult as a child in Hong Kong. Unfortunately it didn’t quite live up to my expectations but the tangy flavours and cold granita helped to balance out the heavy Stoner’s Delight dessert. We all came out thoroughly satiated and happy – MS G’S is guaranteed to be a good night out!
