Our friend Kyle’s dad opened a cute little homely cafe in Stanmore called Percival Road, so we thought we’d head over and check it out! The food is classic breakfast items plus a few Middle Eastern/Spanish inspired dishes.

You might miss Percival Road if you’re not paying attention. It looks just like you’re in someone’s living room, fireplace and all. Except there’s a giant coffee machine in the window! The furniture inside similarly reflects the homely vibe. There’s a long wooden table that I’d love to see in my kitchen some day, when I have a rustic country home (I wish!). We started with coffees and a big pot of chai for me – love it when you can see the actual herbs and spices in there!
The breakfast menu is very approachable – you can get bacons and eggs if you want, but there’s also a couple of creative dishes on the menu.

I was feeling the Chunky avocado & goats cheese on toasted rye with mint, lemon, watercress, pistachios & zaatar ($14) with added bacon ($4) and a poached egg ($4) because bacon added to anything is tops and eggs are good for you. Definitely a decent breakfast, although I’m not sure the watercress and mint added much to the dish. DS went for the Percival Pan Tumaca – vine ripened tomatoes on toasted sourdough with zaatar, EVOO and balsamic reduction topped with jamón serrano ($15), which is a traditional Spanish breakfast dish I believe. Cool presentation with the jamón all rolled up on top! Plus it was a bit of fun to have jamón instead of ham or bacon!

We also got this incredible dish which was more of a dessert than a breakfast. It was a blackboard special of French toast with pannacotta, banana, vanilla ice cream, chia and pistachio ($18). Such epic flavour combinations! The only thing that didn’t really add much was the chia, which in my eyes is essentially flavourless anyway. Otherwise it was amazing having the french toast with pannacotta as well. Definitely more of a dessert than breakfast though!

As we were sipping the last drops of our tea/coffee, the chef came out and gave us some traditional Spanish muffins! Apple and cinnamon flavour – you can’t go wrong and it was awesome to finish off our breakfast with something sweet.
Percival Road isn’t aiming to change the way we view breakfast by creating crazy new dishes. But it’s awesome to have a place where you can eat some staples and try a few new things. Head over if you live in Stanmore, or are keen to make the trip over! It’s still a bit of a hidden gem known only to the locals (it’s not even on Zomato!)!
