I used to work in the city. Ever since changing my job I’ve really missed all the cool cafes and lunch options in the city. No, I’m not talking about the MLC foodcourt (which is pretty good, as far as food courts go). I’m talking about cafes like Cross Eatery or Hills Bros or Regiment. So I was really excited when BACK ROW WEST invited me to check them out – I got to pretend I worked in the city again!
BACK ROW WEST is actually way more than your average city cafe. They have table service and a substantial lunch menu that differs significantly to their breakfast offerings. We were there for breakfast, but I’d love to come back for lunch sometime.

Drinks first! They have a great selection of hot and cold drinks, including smoothies and juices. I had the Vitamin King Juice – Orange, Mint, Pineapple ($7.50) and MM had the Turmeric Latte – Organic Honey and Turmeric ($5). We were so matchy-matchy with our orange drinks! The only gripe I have is that they put ice cubes in my juice. I feel like that really waters it down, and also means they give you less juice! Not cool.

We were both feeling hungry so we got quite large dishes. MM had the Protein Hotcake – Passionfruit, Fresh Berries, Maple Syrup, Mascarpone, Puffed Wild Rice, Pepitas, Toasted Coconut, Plant Protein Powder ($15) with added crispy bacon ($3) and extra avocado ($4). This is definitely the ‘instagrammable’ dish of the menu but not only that, it’s super tasty too! Definitely one for someone who wants a big breakfast.
I had the Breakfast Plate – Two Poached Eggs, Crispy Bacon, Quinoa Salad, Avocado, Sweet Potato Croquette, Beetroot Hummus, Goats Curd, Turmeric Cauliflower Rice, Sourdough ($19). This was excellent until I realised that pretty much everything on there didn’t fit with my low FODMAP diet that I’m trying to adhere to… [Side note: it’s a bit hard to explain what FODMAPs are but basically foods that are high in FODMAPs make me bloated and sick, and they include avocado, sweet potato, beetroot and cauliflower…). So I ate as much as I could and really enjoyed the Pepe Saya butter for my thick-cut, seedy toast!

All in all we had a great meal at BACK ROW WEST. I’d really recommend it to you as a lunch or breakfast option if you work in the city!
