DS and I went to Melbourne over the long week – it was DS’s first time there! Weird, hey! We had a huge list of foodie places to check out and obviously couldn’t get through it all, but I’ll share some of the places we did go to over the coming weeks.
Our first breakfast was at The Kettle Black which has been on my list ever since S and I went to Top Paddock, the sister restaurant, on our Melbourne trip last year. And oh my, was it the most beautiful breakfast I’d ever eaten or what!
There’s always a huge queue at The Kettle Black so we weren’t surprised when we saw people milling around outside the cute white terrace house as we walked up (oh, if you wanted to check out where we stayed, there’s a couple of photos here and here of the Coppersmith Hotel in South Melbourne). But when we got there we were told we could be seated right away if we were okay sitting outside! Considering it was a sunny day, even though it was cold, we though we’d take that instead of waiting.
Coffees first for both of us – very beautiful and precise coffee art for sure, and it’s not cheap at $4 each.
I totally couldn’t resist the Hotcake with ricotta, blueberries, pure maple, double cream, seeds & nuts ($20) – isn’t it the most instagrammable dish ever? (Also isn’t it weird that we use that term now!) It was absolutely amazing and totally lived up to the hype. It’s definitely more like a cake but I loved all the fruit and the different crunchy textures from the nuts, seeds and puffed rice. Highly recommend this if it’s your first visit to The Kettle Black!
DS went for the Seasonal Local Mushroom – cooked and raw – on toast with mushroom powder & fresh goat curd ($17) + extra poached egg ($3). Not sure what the mushroom powder actually added but apart from that this was an excellent. A simple breakfast for those who just want something basic. To be hones, there were so many amazing sounding things on the menu it was actually quite difficult to choose! Definitely keen to back on our next Melbourne trip.
