Chapeau! Grill & Bar – Hamburg, Germany

chapeau steak

Juicy, juicy steak… you would never think that I was a vegetarian for 2 years if you saw me tuck into the food at Chapeau! Grill & Bar in Hamburg, Germany.

It’s kind of like a renovated pub with an industrial feel to it, with a rectangular bar taking the centrepiece of the room as you walk in. The exposed brick wall, tasteful and artsy graffiti, polished concrete floors and metal tube lights that hang down onto each table all give Chapeau! its own character. I imagine it’s great in summer too. It’s situated right on one of the canals and the outdoor seating would be ideal for brunch. However, by night, it serves a mix of French fare and pub food.

Fun fact of the day: with its many canals and streams, Hamburg has over 2400 bridges – that’s more than London, Amsterdam and Venice put together (source: Wikipedia).

We order one of the three set menus on offer: Entrecôte Menu – CHAPEAU! Salad with walnuts, Entrecôte 300g with homemade Pommes Frites & sauce of your choice (€30). It’s quite pricey, but it’s the best steak they have and it is very, very good.

chapeau fries

The fries are awesome. You can definitely tell they are home made as the potato skin is still visible on some of them. The selection of sauces is also great, although we weren’t convinced by the gravy/sauce for the meat. Germans tend to eat their fries with mayonnaise (just the way I like it!) so we got that as well as a spicy tomato-y chutney sauce. Oh and they give you a salad to start off with as well which was actually quite tasty (coming from someone who doesn’t like salad…).

All in all, we really enjoyed our hearty meal here and would love to be back to try other things on the menu. However, I’d definitely recommend getting a steak if you’re going for the first time. Steak is what it’s about at Chapeau!
