Please, do allow the mysterious Mr Tipply to take you on a post-work journey of eating and drinks (and maybe dancing the night away, if that’s your thing).
But first – dranks! Something non-alcoholic and apple-y for me, a negroni for L, as we were seated in a booth by the door…which all sounds lovely, until you realise you can’t hear your friend who is sitting 20cm away from you.
Yes, the popcorn shrimp (complete with chilli mayo) was really tasty, and the Mongolian lamb cutlets with mint and coriander vinaigrette was really something else (yes I’d definitely go back just for them) but – sorry – excuse me – what was that you said? Come again? Sorry? I think my hearing is going.
I’m going to have to quote from the good old Good Food (of the Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesdays) in their review last week:
“I challenge you to find me someone who can enjoy shiraz and twice-cooked quail while Carly Rae Jepsen is burning their eardrums off…The volume is adjusted on other nights of the week but surely Mr Tipply would not approve of such incivility.”
In case you were wondering, this is Mr Tipply. Quite the character and yes, his food is really good! The Barramundi Fillet in banana leaf with sambal chilli, cherry tomato salad and fresh lime is very good, and the ‘Char Siu’ Beef Short Ribs with Asian slaw are really delightful. Both solid dishes.
Also worth a mention is the 500g T-bone steak with black bean butter sauce which is a real man’s meal. Excellent flavours with the minimal condiments really allowing the meat to speak for itself.
The thing is – they could really do something about the music. There’s a lovely dining area out the back as well. It’s away from the bustle of people standing around you/your booth with their drinks, so it should really be utilised. And with food of such high quality, you really do want to enjoy it properly. Eating in a club doesn’t really work (unless it’s Hugo’s I guess…but then again, that’s pizza). The Asian-fusion quality of the dishes is done really well. It is subtle and not overpowering, and doesn’t miss the mark like I have seen it be missed before. Adding chilli to everything doesn’t make it Asian, y’all!
Thanks for the great food Mr Tipply’s – we just wish we could’ve enjoyed it in a more relaxed, quiet setting.
