There is one reason that Gallo Nero is my dad’s favourite restaurant and I go there every single time I’m in Hamburg – the home-made pasta with parmesan and fresh truffles. No words can describe the wonder of this dish, and I have never tried anything like it in any other Italian restaurant. Having said all of this, the rest of the menu is also quite great! Plenty of other pastas to choose from, amazing selection of wines, the all-Italian staff are friendly and the atmosphere always pleasant.

  • What we ate:

The amuse bouche was a small square of ricotta with tomato gelée on top and a thin slice of crisp bread – perfect to whet your appetite for the taste explosions to come. DS and I shared the burratina (small burrata) with tomato as a starter (not pictured) – you can’t really go wrong with the solid-yet-squishy texture of that cheese. Then I had the (very generously portioned) lamb cutlets with mash, spinach and roast tomato, whilst DS had the pleasure of ordering the home-made pasta with the parmesan waffle and fresh winter truffles (a dish I usually always stake my claim on first). There was of course some obligatory sharing of the meal, leaving us both well satisfied.

Dessert consisted of two staple European desserts – the panna cotta and the creme brulée. Both simply done, I always find that these dishes are best left in their original state, without adding any extra gastronomical flourishes or flavours.

I definitely recommend this restaurant if you’re up for a good feed in Hamburg – but book ahead, the restaurant fills up fast! In summer there is also the opportunity to sit outside and enjoy the long twilight hours of northern Europe.

The opening of MATTEO was very much anticipated in Double Bay. Not only did it mean the long vacant site of former Italian restaurant Limoncello was finally being filled (by another Italian, nonetheless!). It also meant that Orazio D’Elia’s (of Da Orazio fame) food was now […]
