If you’ve been a long-time reader of my blog, you’ll know about Sylt. It’s an island in the north sea that my family have been visiting over the German summer since my dad was about 12 years old. In the 70s, my grandparents bought a piece of land and built a typical Friesian house on it, complete with thatched roof. Continuing in my dad’s tradition, I have been visiting every year and in the last few years, bringing DS along as well!
The little village we stay in is called Keitum. It’s become more popular in the last 10 years or so, with some fancy shops and nice restaurants popping up. One of those is JOHANNES KING, which is an all-day bar/restaurant that mainly serves small dishes. We headed there for a light lunch!

I had the Small potato pancakes with house smoked salmon (€21.50). In hindsight, this was quite an overpriced dish. Each piece was a little bigger than one mouthful. The salmon, however, was thicker than the smoked salmon I’m used to and seemed to be of extremely good quality. I did wish I ordered something else though…

DS had the Homemade pasta with chanterelles (€19). I feel like we have an unspoken rule that whenever chanterelles are on the menu, we must order them. They’re just so rare in Australia! Again, the portion was quite small and we probably should’ve ordered something else to share. But it’s a simple dish that really allows the chanterelles’ flavour to shine – I like that! If I was to compare though, I would definitely say the pasta and chanterelle dish we had at GALLO NERO in Hamburg definitely wins.
JOHANNES KING has a lovely atmosphere and outdoor seating area, but don’t go expecting to have a big lunch. There’s lots of other restaurants around for that! They also have a bit of a deli / shop section that’s nice to browse through.
