Curry-Pirates – Hamburg, Germany

Curry-Pirates spread

DS and I are always on the hunt for a good currywurst. For those who don’t know what that is, here’s the Wikipedia page. It’s kind of Germany’s answer to fast food, and the perfect late night snack. We found that they’re on every street corner in Berlin. In Hamburg, however, it’s a bit harder to find. So we looked it up on the ol’ Google and found CURRY-PIRATES not far from home!

We rocked up fairly early so it was pretty quiet. I imagine it gets busier later in the evening! This place takes its sausages very seriously. Apart from the standard currywurst, there’s lots of other sausages to choose from! Also important to note that it’s not really a ‘restaurant’. There’s some high tables with bar chairs, but the seating is not really comfortable. It’s more of a grab-and-go kind of place.

CURRY-PIRATES make all their sausages in house! Supposedly the Currywurst (€3.80) is made with dried apricots inside, but DS said he couldn’t really taste it. Maybe the curry sauce and powder was just masking the taste? Either way it was definitely delicious, and a bit more ‘high end’ than your street-side currywurst we’ve had in Berlin.

SALSICCIA – Italian herb Bratwurst with a tomato and mustard sauce (€3.80)

Original Belgian fries (€3.30) with mayonnaise (€0.60)

I have the SALSICCIA – Italian herb Bratwurst with a tomato and mustard sauce (€3.80) which was super tasty too. I didn’t love the spring onions on top, but it’s a lighter sausage variety if that’s what you’re after. And of course – very important to wash it all down (not literally) with Original Belgian fries (€3.30) with mayonnaise (€0.60)There are loads of other sauces to choose from too, but for me, mayo is the obvious choice!

We’re definitely planning on coming back to CURRY-PIRATES for currywurst and more next time. They also have a weekly sausage special! It’s a bit more fancy than eating your currywurst on the side of the street, but hey, with such good quality sausages we’re not complaining!
