Dinner @ Elementary – Tai Hang, Hong Kong

Chilli crab pasta, angel hair, garlic, lemon zest crumbs (HK$148) – we requested no chilli

Time gets away from you sometimes, especially when you’re having fun in Hong Kong! That’s exactly what happened to us when we had planned to go to dinner at ELEMENTARY in Tai Hang. We were having drinks with friends first up (mocktail for me, doh) and just couldn’t seem to drag ourselves away for our 8:30pm dinner booking. Then we pushed the booking to 9pm…then we eventually arrived at 9:30pm. Lucky for us places in Hong Kong open late!

Tomatoes – lemon yoghurt, balsamic caviar, Thai basil, confit leeks (HK$68)

The menu at ELEMENTARY is helpfully divided into Light, Medium and Heavy dishes. We weren’t super hungry, so we decided to get one dish from each section. From the Light section we got the Tomatoes – lemon yoghurt, balsamic caviar, Thai basil, confit leeks (HK$68)It’s basically a fancy tomato salad. The balsamic caviar in particular makes it sound VERY fancy. I’m not sure if the lemon yoghurt really worked, to be honest. Lemon and tomato isn’t really something I see working well…nevertheless it was a lovely, light entree dish.

Chilli crab pasta, angel hair, garlic, lemon zest crumbs (HK$148) – we requested no chilli

From the Medium section of the menu we had the Chilli crab pasta, angel hair, garlic, lemon zest crumbs (HK$148). Of course, we requested it without chilli – I have the lowest tolerance ever for spicy foods! It was a very simple and subtle dish, with the crab meat ground down into almost a puree. Unfortunately I kept finding little bits of shell with every second mouthful, but I suppose that’s inevitable.

Sticky lamb ribs, apple radish & mint slaw (HK$148)

From the Heavy section of the menu we got the Sticky lamb ribs, apple radish & mint slaw (HK$148). I gotta say – they were definitely heavy! The ribs had a thick coating of marinade which was actually a bit spicy. It contrasted nicely with the slaw which was covered in ‘slaw sauce’, for lack of a better term. I guess it’s mayonnaise! My favourite part was how the meat just fell off the ribs…delicious! I’m glad we shared all our dishes because I would not have been able to get through this on my own!

ELEMENTARY also has an epic breakfast menu and I went back later in our trip to check it out – so make sure you come back and have another read!

I don’t always visit new restaurants. In fact, there’s a whole selection of restaurants we go back to a lot – Bar Brosé was one of them (still mourning that loss). Another one is MS G’S, Merivale’s fun Asian-fusion joint in Potts Point. Every time […]

SAN Bruxelles – Brussels, Belgium

I don’t quite recall how I heard about SAN BRUXELLES. What I did recall, though, was feeling really excited at eating some modern dishes inspired by Asian flavours. Enough of traditional hearty Flemish food! I did enjoy all that. However, it was time to change […]
