I was so stoked to be invited to COBO HOUSE in Hong Kong last week, to sample some delicious food and drinks as part of their collaboration with Danish furniture store BoConcept. I am a huge fan of both these brands – in fact, I am writing this while seated at our BoConcept dining table, and we also have a BoConcept desk upstairs in our study! (Just on the down low, I’m currently also coveting a new BoConcept bed…). On our last visit to HK earlier this year, DS and I had also been to COBO HOUSE for their delicious high tea. It was definitely one of the best high teas I’ve ever had…and it gave me a taste (pun intended) of the creative things that COBO HOUSE does!
This time round our experience was quite different. We were led to one of the dining rooms upstairs, which was filled with beautiful BoConcept furniture. The centrepiece was, of course, the artwork created by artist and founder of Production Q, Queenie Rosita Law.

I loved how up close, the painting looked like a mess of brushstrokes. But take a step back, and the brushstrokes turn into a branch full of vibrant flowers. Who else is keen to have this in their living room?!

As we continued to enjoy the beautiful furniture around us, our food and drinks started to arrive!

First up we had the Smørrebrød (Herring Fillet with Spinach Sandwich). Now, I have to admit – herring is not my favourite fish. Whilst I wasn’t looking forward to this sandwich that much, I was pleasantly surprised by how colourful it looked! It was like a rainbow between two slices of bread! Taste-wise, the herring is definitely the strongest flavour of the sandwich, however it is also complemented by the veggies, pickled onions and also the blue cheese sauce you can drizzle on top. If you’re a fish lover, you will love this.

When I saw that the Æble Kanelstang (Apple Cinnamon Danish) was next up on the menu, I was expecting your usual small pastry. But look at this huge stick of crumbly pastry! And where do you even find a plate long and skinny enough to fit it?! It seemed like the plate and the danish were made for each other. AKB and I both loved this, particularly smearing large dollops of vanilla whipped cream on top of every mouthful. Delicious! This is definitely the kind of Danish food that I like.

I actually think that the drinks were the most creative part of the menu. Because I don’t drink alcohol, AKB had the Nordic Sun cocktail. We were provided with a helpful explanation: “Aquavit, a distilled spirit mostly produced in Scandinavia since the 15th century, is used as the base of the cocktail. This grain spirit is mainly flavoured with a variety of herbs and spices to offer a special taste. Nordic Sun uses Dill and Pickle, a Classic Scandinavian cuisine combo, as the main ingredients of the cocktail, and a popular Nordic additive, Elderflower, is also applied to produce a Scandinavian flavour.” I’m not sure if dill and pickled are the best accompaniments for a cocktail, but they definitely made the whole thing taste very Scandinavian!
I had the Tivoli Garden: “Named after an amusement park and pleasure garden in Copenhagen, Tivoli Garden is a coffee themed mocktail with coffee and jam as the major ingredients resembling the image of a blissful breakfast. A shot of cold brew coffee mixed with Gooseberry jam, bergamot, rose syrup and soda provides customers with a refreshing taste of coffee and fruitiness.” This was so tasty!!! The rose and coffee flavours really worked well together, I can’t believe I haven’t had this combination before. It was like drinking a very fresh summery spritz, just delightful!

After devouring all our food and slurping up all our drinks, it was unfortunately time to leave the sunny dining room for other Hong Kong food adventures. I’m now eagerly looking forward to my next meal at COBO HOUSE!
