Madam Woo – Queenstown, New Zealand

Spring rolls, shiitake mushroom (NZ$9)

This is a bit of a throwback to my trip to Queenstown, New Zealand, last year. On our last night, the Mothership and I were craving some Asian food and so we went to MADAM WOO in the centre of town. I’d heard from quite a lot of people that it was really good for casual Asian-fusion / Malaysian dishes and it certainly did not disappoint!

Crouching Tiger – apple juice, ginger beer, mint, honey (NZ$9)

Did I mention that I love it when restaurants have non-alcoholic beverages that aren’t boring? Even better when they have a mocktail list! The Crouching Tiger – apple juice, ginger beer, mint, honey (NZ$9) was just what I needed after a long day of driving to Glenorchy and back, super refreshing!

Hawker Roll – soy, sesame eggplant (without red chilli dressing) (NZ$14)

Char Kway Teow – with added tofu, less spice (NZ$24)

Char Siu BBQ Pork Ribs – twice cooked, hoisin, soy and sesame (NZ$20)

It might not look like that much food, but we actually over-ordered (lol)! Maybe it’s because mum and I are both small people, but we were so sad we couldn’t finish the Char Siu BBQ Pork Ribs – twice cooked, hoisin, soy and sesame (NZ$20). We even thought about getting takeaway…all the way back to Sydney as our flight was the next day!

We started with the Spring rolls, shiitake mushroom (NZ$9) which were actually giant spring rolls and already quite filling. Next up was one of the Hawker Rolls. They have quite a few different flavours on the menu so take your pick! We got the vegetarian Hawker Roll with soy, sesame eggplant (without red chilli dressing) (NZ$14). It’s kind of like an Asian burrito on a piece of roti, I guess? Our Char Kway Teow (NZ$24) wasn’t quite the same as the one on the menu, mainly because Char Kway Teow is traditionally very spicy. I don’t eat spicy food at all so we requested chilli on the side just for the Mothership, and also added in some tofu. It was great that they were accommodating with this dish, we really appreciated that.

As I mentioned above the portion sizes were deceptively big, so make sure you actually leave room for dessert because we didn’t! Sad face. Oh well, just another excuse to go back to Queenstown! You can have a look at my other Queenstown posts here, here and here.
