If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ll see that I’m currently in New Zealand with my mum! We’re staying in an incredible resort called MILLBROOK RESORT which is actually located near Arrowtown, a little town about 30 minutes out of Queenstown. It’s all incredibly convenient thought, since the resort runs regular free shuttles down to Queenstown and Arrowtown. We’re not feeling isolated at all, and are enjoying the peace and quiet surrounded by beautiful mountains and the most pristine golf course I’ve ever seen.
MILLBROOK RESORT is not just a golf course though, there’s some really amazing dining options. Their fine dining restaurant is MILLHOUSE RESTAURANT and we had dinner there on our first night.
We started our dinner off with a cute little AMUSE BOUCHE. From memory, it was a homemade cracker with some sort of fish flakes and cream. Mother also likes to start every meal with a bit of bread (she’s quite un-Chinese in that way!). We were so surprised as we expected just a bread roll! The Millhouse Baked Bread – Olive oil, whipped butter, herb salt, shallot & chive crème fraîche (NZ$14) was truly a beautiful selection with some great condiments.. I think there was some pumpkin bread with pumpkin seeds which I particularly enjoyed.
There is normally a Japanese restaurant on site as well, however it’s closed for the colder months as the resort receives less visitors. They therefore offer a selection of the Japanese menu at MILLHOUSE RESTAURANT as well, so Mother went with the Maguro Isobe Tataki – Seaweed crusted tuna, cucumber, avocado & wasabi mousse, watermelon, edamame, ponzu green beans, brazil nuts & apple miso (NZ$33). Wow, when the dish came out we were both blown away. It was like an artwork on black canvas! All the parts of the dish are laid out in such a fun way, it’s hard to know where to start eating! Mother really, really enjoyed this dish – would highly recommend it as a lighter dinner alternative.
I went with a vegetarian option. That’s because I knew I’d be eating steak at BOTSWANA BUTCHERY in Queenstown the following night. The Mushroom Tortellini – confit egg yolk, pickled shiitake, ciabatta crisp, oyster mushroom, cheese sauce (NZ$43) was very beautifully presented as well. A mushroom consommé is poured over from a teapot to finish the dish – very theatrical! The only part of the dish that I thought didn’t quite work was the pickled shiitake. It’s very sour and cuts through the smooth mushroom tortellini filling and cheese in an unpleasant way. That is just a small thing though. We were otherwise so pleased with out meal!
It’s also such a beautiful setting. You get to sit in an old millhouse overlooking a pond, watching the ducks as the sun goes down. Highly recommend booking a table at MILLHOUSE RESTAURANT if you’re in Queenstown or the surrounding area!
