As Textbook Boulangerie Patisserie just announced they’re making a blue croissant, I thought it was time to look back on their famous truffle croissant, that drove food bloggers and normal people alike quite mad.

Ok, I’m sorry, but this is just ridiculous (in a good way). I thought the croissant was all you got but you open it up and it’s got this buttery, creamy, sweet, truffle spread too?! The sweet filling actually surprised me! Croissants are always savoury in my mind so that was an odd taste upon first bite. However, both DS and agreed that it actually worked well. I wonder what the blueberry croissants will be filled with? Blueberry jam perhaps?

Unfortunately I believe these truffle croissants are no longer available…Sad faces all round. I guess truffle season has ended too so it makes sense, but no doubt they’ll be making a triumphant return next winter.

DS and I also went for ‘proper breakfast’ (yes guys, truffle croissants do not count as a nutritious breakfast). I had the Shaynna Special with bacon, egg, tomato on a brioche bun ($12). It’s a pretty standard kind of bacon and egg roll, and definitely a hearty / messy breakfast! I would get it get again because I think it’s priced really well. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

DS got the Jersey Burrito ($14) which was actually more of a wrap than a burrito. All the usual breakfast wrap ingredients such as egg, spinach, tomatoes, ham, cheese. Again, pretty standard but not bad for the price.

Actually, the most disappointing thing about Textbook is the decor and atmosphere! From their website, Instagram and the pastries they make, I had expected a really cute little French cafe with a cool fit-out and atmosphere. By contrast, we found a stark, overly bright white space with cheap furniture. Some tables were messy (staff weren’t great at cleaning up the tables after people had left) and looked a bit makeshift – as if they’d just moved in. Obviously their gimicky pastries are enough to pull people in but I actually don’t think I’d go back because the atmosphere wasn’t comfortable. My recommendation – get takeaway and find a nice spot in the sun!
