Extreeeeeme milkshakes + more to be found at XS Espresso right now!
Let’s talk about this place – I know you’ve seen photos of their milkshakes all around the place now. And they are, indeed, as ridic and tasty as you imagine them to me. I like to go for the classic flavours (because cafes and restaurants need to do the classics well, before branching out to the fancies!) so I had a Vanilla Smoothie ($7) while CK went for the Cookies & Cream Smoothie ($7) which would’ve been my second choice.
My thoughts: really great classic smoothie. The cream on top is probably a bit much, but the chocolate stick things on top are fun! Her thoughts: cookies & cream literally tastes like…crushed up oreos with milk. And if you haven’t had enough crushed cookie smoothie, never fear there’s an extra oreo on top for you!
Let’s talk about the other dessert items – we also got two scrolls which are enticingly displayed behind glass as you line up along the counter to order. I had the Nutella Scroll which came slathered in even more chocolate – a bit of overkill in my opinion, but still very delicious nonetheless. CK had the Cinnamon Scroll but you’d never know as it was just covered in icing sugar! Is this a thing I don’t know about? Normally cinnamon scrolls look like this in my mind… After brushing off some of the icing sugar and trying not to inhale and choke on it all, what was underneath was very good though.
Onto the savouries – there was actually a bit of confusion at first as CK and I were given different menus. Turns out I had an old menu which still have Green Eggs & Ham on the menu, which I would’ve loved. But unfortunately that wasn’t available anymore so I went for the Delicious Dean (stack) – Avocado, Fresh Cherry Tomatoes on Sourdough with Goats Cheese, Prosciutto, Basil Pesto and Poached Eggs ($15) – all round no real complaints about this one, it’s a hearty meal. Just one small comment would be that the sprouts on top don’t really add anything, and balsamic vinegar was also added on top which would normally be great, but mixed with the basil pesto it turned into an unsavoury dark brown colour, with a very bitter taste…but that’s just a small thing.
CK had the XS Stack – Avocado, Grilled Tomato, Grilled Haloumi & Poached Eggs on Sourdough ($15) which was quite similar to the Delicious Dean stack I had. The haloumi could’ve been fried a bit longer and I don’t think the tomato was actually grilled. Overall, it was not a bad meal.
All in all, I think they could pay a bit more attention to the breakfast/brunch dishes and work on the details, but they are a crazy busy cafe with a constant line so I understand that can be difficult! I’d recommend going there for the sweet dessert offerings over the savoury dishes as well, because the sweet stuff is what really sets XS Espresso apart.
