Sunday in Melbourne – Hammer & Tong, Huxtaburger

breakfast ramen

By the Sunday of our Melbourne weekend (eating) trip, S and I were thoroughly stuffed and full. It’s really a mind-over-body matter because I was still truly ready to keep eating, but my body was saying no (kind of the opposite to Christina Aguilera’s classic ‘Genie in a Bottle’ lyrics My body’s saying let’s go, but my mind is saying no…). I’m so glad we still powered through though and got to try Hammer & Tong for breakfast and Huxtaburger for lunch before jumping on a flight back to Sydney.

I’d heard heaps about Hammer & Tong‘s breakfast ramen so it was a bit of a no-brainer when we got there that at least one of us had to order it. The menu is very innovative and interesting – occasionally bordering on weird! S’s Breakfast ramen – 62 degrees hens egg, bacon, shittake mushroom, spring onion, bacon dashi ($19.50) was definitely not weird though and looked amazing. I love the theatrics of pouring the soup of the noodles and egg at our table – more places should do a breakfast ramen! Takes me back to childhood memories of eating 2-minute noodles for breakfast…

I was intrigued by the Salt & Pepper French Toast, fried duck egg, maple, chorizo smoked oreo crumbs, duck egg & salted caramel ice cream ($22.50) which is just a total flavour explosion in your mouth – especially at breakfast! I really enjoyed most of the dish (the chorizo smoked oreo crumbs were particularly good because it’s kind of like eating bacon but it has that sweet edge to it!) but the I found the ice cream to be too much and too heavy. Sure, you know it’s a heavy dish when you order it but all of that is already enough without salted caramel added into the mix! I believe this is also one of the signature dishes at Hammer & Tong though, so please do go and try it if it’s up your alley! blue beer signred beer sign

After packing up our hotel room it was time for our last meal – we couldn’t miss Huxtaburger! It’s located in a very business-y part of the city, which meant that it was completely dead on a Sunday. We got there and were like…errr is this right?

huxtaburgerThankfully it was right! And we quickly tucked into our burgers. S. had the Huxtaburger ($9.50) because – you gotta have the original when you go to any place that’s famous for something! Very well priced, although it doesn’t come with fries which is a bit of a shame. I was still pretty full from breakfast but good thing they have a mini burger option!!  Good old Rudy (the mini cheese burger with the cutest name around!) can be yours for just $6! Also, you should definitely have some chips. The regular size will set you back just $3 which is worth it, in my opinion.

And alas, we’ve come to our last meal of the Melbourne trip. Check our parts 1 and 2 if you haven’t already and I’d love to hear about your Melbourne food experiences in the comments below!
