KAMPs Café – Keitum, Sylt, Germany

After a 30+ hour journey (various photos of which can be found on Instagram), across basically all continents, across all cultures that I am from, and using various forms of transport I have arrived at the small, idyllic island of Sylt. Sylt is located in the North Sea, at the very north end of Germany – from the top of the island you can even see Denmark! My family have been coming here from decades, after building a cute house here in the 60s. It is very much part of my childhood, and coming here every year brings back fond memories. Sylt has recently become more of a culinary hub – most of the restaurants used to be just seafood restaurants, but now theres a bit more on offer including some nice little cafes in each town. The Mother and I visited KAMPs this afternoon – a hotel, café, restaurant and art gallery.

Germans have a lot of different cakes – but once we saw the fresh, home-made waffles on the menu the Mother and I decided that would be the perfect afternoon snack. There were two options on the menu – Waffles with Mövenpick vanilla ice cream, ‘red fruit jelly’ and whipped cream, or Waffles with Mövenpick Amarena (cherry) ice cream, cherries and whipped cream, but the waitress informed us that we could also have the Waffles with fresh strawberries and whipped cream (€4.90). As strawberries seem to be in season at the moment (they are EVERYWHERE at the supermarkets) we couldn’t pass up this offer. The fresh waffle was absolutely wonderful – not too sweet, and the perfect slightly crunchy but soft on the inside combination. Am pretty keen to come back for more tomorrow…

Friesland-mix 'Sunday tea' - a Darjeeling, Ceylon and Assam mix (€4.30)

There was also a very large selection of tea, and I went for the Frisland-mix ‘Sunday tea’ – a Darjeeling, Ceylon and Assam mix (€4.30). Sylt is part of the North Frisian Island, and this blend of tea is specific to this area. The small bowl of brown sugar next to my teacup is full of kandis, a kind of rock candy that is also quite unique to this region. I’ve never seen tea served with kandis anywhere else in the world! Because it is ‘brown sugar’, I feel like it is a healthier option to put in your tea.

DSC_3318What a lovely way to spend my first afternoon! Quite a few more meals to come before I head off to London next week – so stayed tuned and follow me on Instagram
