Walking to this restaurant from Blackfriars station I couldn’t really figure out what to expect. Every second building I was passing contained a law firm or two, yet this quirkily named restaurant is right amongst it? Disco Bistro made me think of a roller disco – will that feature? And all of this is located above a normal English pub. It’s actually a really interesting area of tiny pedestrian alleyways to walk through. Get there early so you can check out the surrounds too!

Turns out the restaurant has a casual diner-slash-pub feel, squirrel lamps on the walls alongside old movie posters, the service is lovely and the food mind-blowing.

  • What we ate

We decided to go all out and order two lots of snacks as well as burgers. We picked the good old fried chicken wings with sticky sauce (hot sauce option also possible, £7) which were definitely well sticky, leaning more towards the sweet and sour sauce side than the bbq sauce side in flavour. We also decided to go for a dish in which, cryptically, only the ingredients were listed on the menu: fois gras, shredded BBQ duck. It arrived somewhat like a bruschetta, and tasted like something so decadent it could’ve come straight form the court of Louis XIV yet at the same time really fulfilling in this winter weather. I have seriously never tasted anything like this before, definite recommendation if it’s still on the menu. Every mouthful was savoured.

DS went for the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Roll with Pat’s hot sauce, avocado, bacon and spicy mayo (£12). Literally every bite was followed by groanings of pleasure and mutterings of ‘happy days…happy happy days’. This is definitely man-food, it fills you up, and the portion of chips isn’t lacking either. I chose the Disco Burger with a pure devon ruby patty, cheese, bacon and BBQ short rib (£14), but unfortunately I was utterly defeated by it and only managed to eat half the portion. That also meant that there was no room for dessert – especially sad because the hot chocolate donuts looked so tempting! Maybe next time.
