As most Sydney-siders should know, Bourke Street Bakery is an amazing place to go. Not only have they opened in Marrickville, Alexandria and in their original location on Bourke Street in Surry Hills, they have now opened in the heart of Potts Point, joining many other great eateries. Cafe by day, ‘After Hours’ opens from 6pm and serves a variety of well-priced share plates and small bites. Added bonus – the chef let us take home a few loaves of awesome bread afterwards!
- What we ate:
Our meal started with some complimentary honey and chilli roasted nuts – so moreish! AKB and I then shared 3 plates, which turned out to be more than enough for the both of us! We started with the After Hours Deli Plate ($28) which includes a variety of antipasti that you can otherwise order separately, such as marinated green olives; an extremely tasty buffalo mozzarella with tomato, basil and anchovy; bresaola, manchego cheese and a gherkin on a skewer; smoked eel dip and a sausage stuffed eggplant. What a great way to start a meal!

We then had the mushrooms with baby leek and green sauce ($14) – a large selection of western and asian mushrooms, cooked simply and tastefully. La Raclette (a Swiss cheese dish) ($20) was served with its traditional side of potatoes and pickles, as well as some extra salami. Such hearty food reminds you of sitting in a mountain chalet surrounded by snow topped Alps.

Upon the staff’s recommendation we decided on having two desserts – the Mixed Lolly Plate ($7) and the Flourless Chocolate Sponge of Passionfruit Mousse, Praline and Meringue ($12). The Lolly plate is always fun for those who just want a small dessert full of variety – it consisted of a dark chocolate coated salted caramel, a small chocolate praline, a marshmallow, a sugar covered jelly and dark chocolate coated honeycomb. The Flourless Sponge, however, was MIND BLOWING. So many layers, so much goodness, so not what we expected, so enjoyable.
Some comments on the service though – it wasn’t made clear to us that there was two options for the raclette with potatoes (with or without salami), and although we didn’t specify, the staff should probably have doubled checked which one we wanted, as we would probably have opted for the cheaper (non-salami) option ($14 instead of $20). Another mishap occurred when we asked for the rest of our meal in a takeaway container – the container never arrived, and we were too caught up in dessert to remember it ourselves! Such attention to detail is important in wait-staff, perhaps after a few more months practice it will improve.
