Going to be honest, this place did not impress DS and I one bit the first time we went – maybe it was because I was feeling sick that night, and my food had some sort of barley in it, back when all those alternative grains were in fashion (yeahhhh quinoa). Since then we have been back 3 times – and each time we get more addicted to it. It has definitely become a neighbourhood regular for us, with its casual half-in half-out seating, heaters in the winter, minimalist birch wood stools, consistant good food and reasonable prices. We have also never found the no-bookings policy a problem – this time we went around 7pm on a Saturday night and had no difficulties getting a table.
- What we ate:
We were given a very generous portion of deep fried whitebait with lemon aioli ($15) – the perfect starter to munch on. But really, the portion was a bit too generous so I recommend sharing it with several people.
DS had the veal schnitzel with roast eggplant, braised cabbage and porcini sauce ($22) – beautiful tender meat matched very well with the sauce which came in a cute, mini jug. We were just a bit uncertain about the way in which the eggplant was garnished.
I had the suckling pig (which I had also had in a sandwich form for lunch!) with cavolo nero, celeriac and roast pear ($22). What a tremendous way to combine fruit and meat! Perfectly balanced by the light acidic elements of the small celeriac salad.
We finished the evening with a coffee and two small chocolate drops ($2 for 2) that melted away pleasingly in our mouths.
