kürtösh – Surry Hills

Cinnamon kurtosh; flourless chocolate cake

A little gem, down the road away from the ‘trendy’ end of Crown Street in Surry Hills. This cafe is the second in the kürtösh family – the first one located at The Spot, St Pauls Street, in Randwick. I had been to the Randwick cafe several times on a late night hunt for cake. The amazing thing is that the cake is sold by WEIGHT! This means you don’t have to labour away at that overly-plump slab of cake that wasn’t that great to begin with – choose smaller portions and have a taste of several different cakes – they all look amazing anyway. Unfortunately it seems like not many have discovered this cafe yet – only two tables (including ours) was filled in a cafe that could easily accommodate 30-40 people. Get in fast and eat ALLLLL THE CAAAKE!

  • What we ate:

The main attraction of course are the kürtösh pastries. We chose the traditional cinnamon topping ($7.50), which was then baked fresh for us in the special kürtösh oven and served warm. I recommend sharing the pastry, or saving half and taking it home (it can be frozen and then reheated in the oven). I also tried a small slice of the flourless chocolate cake which was soft, almost pudding-like, topped with cream and a thin layer of dark chocolate. Tea and espresso was also had, both very satisfactory.
