Well I’ve gotta say: we really didn’t expect to find decent ramen in Amsterdam. After trying out DE JAPANNER and realising that Amsterdam might actually have decent Japanese food, we thought we’d give FOU FOW RAMEN a go, since we had walked past it a few times already.
It’s always a good sign when the place is run by Japanese people. Another good sign (literally) was a bright pink neon sign on the exposed brick wall that read: “ssslurppp”. Yes, that is definitely the right way to consume your ramen.

I think I mentioned in my last post about Amsterdam that I had really been craving some Asian food. A few weeks in Germany will do that to you. So even though the menu at FOU FOW RAMEN wasn’t small, we both decided to go for the good old standard Tonkotsu Ramen (classic) – topped with pork cha siu, spinach, spring onions, half egg, bean sprouts and kombu) (€12.50). But no spring onions for me! I really don’t like them for some reason (and also grew up being told they were somehow dirty because they don’t wash them or they’re raw or something?!).

While FOU FOW RAMEN doesn’t compare to some of the best ramen places we have in Sydney, it definitely fixed my craving. I find the addition of spinach both pleasing and odd. Pleasing, because I’m all for getting your 5 serves of vegetables a day. Odd, because I feel like it’s not a normal tonkotsu ramen topping. Do you guys have an opinion on this?!
I’ve since found out from a friend who lives in Amsterdam that FOU FOW RAMEN is some of the best in Amsterdam, so I’m glad we got to check it out. I’m also glad, because our next few meals in Amsterdam were strictly Western food only! Stay tuned for more.
