1606 Luis de Torres – Rhodes, Sydney

Haven’t been to Rhodes much lately (especially now that IKEA is at Tempe!) so when the kind folks at 1606 Luis de Torres invited us to visit, we didn’t hesitate on taking them up on their offer!

1606 Luis de Torres is a cute little cafe on the main strip of Rhodes. Amongst all the other Asian eateries there, it stands out with its clean and minimalist interior and mixed cuisine. It’s also known for  soft drinks served in those trendy lightbulb glasses. I’m personally not a massive fan, but this is their signature ‘Ade’ (short for lemonade I think!) in Lemon Blue Hawaiian flavour ($6.50). If blue drinks are your thing, go ahead! I also tried the Taro Latte ($4) which was very tasty but it did taste artificial. Personally I prefer more natural coloured substances…

The menu is very varied. You can pretty much get anything you feel like. There’s pizza, pastas, soup, Asian-flavoured dishes like bulgogi beef omelette, all day breakfast… DS and I were there for brunch/lunch so he opted for the Eggs Benedict ($15.50) with bacon and avo which was really tasty! The Clay-pot baked eggs with cheese bread ($15) intrigued me, because who doesn’t love a claypot! It was very garlicky so definitely get that if that’s your thing! The cheese toast was tasty by itself as well, but the whole thing was a bit heavy all combined together. We washed it all down with a (huge) side of chips with aioli and tomato sauce ($9.50)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

1606 Luis de Torres is a cute little cafe for a casual meal. It’s not overly pretentious and I love that it has that Asian style of dining where you just get a little bit of every cuisine, haha! Definitely a hallmark of a lot of Hong Kong cafes in my childhood. Funnily enough the name comes from a guy who was Columbus’ interpreter who maybe perhaps could’ve discovered Australia a lot earlier had he not altered his ship’s course…life here would’ve turned out very differently if he had!
