The colourful food is the good stuff. That’s one thing I’ve learned in my eating journey over the past year. Our foodie day (the beginnings of which can be seen here) led us to Milk at lunch. We had walked up the the Edinburgh Castle after breakfast, and around the back and down the hill we found Milk.

An adorable little cafe in a not-so-lovely looking street. I love the minimal decor, the wood versus the green and cream tiles. This is my ideal cafe food – something a bit different and unusual, but still super tasty and healthy. To aid you in your choice there are little symbols next to each dish – a star means it’s a superfood! A heart means it is low in fat, and there are also plenty of vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, wheat free and dairy free options!

I went for the Courgette, Lemon and Feta Fritters – with herby slaw, roasted butternut squash, watercress, ras el hanout dressing and preserved lemon relish (£4.50). While I’m not really a fan of traditional salad (i.e. where everything is raw and green coloured and leafy) I do like salads that are a bit different and super colour – exhibit A in the first photo above. Can’t even begin to imagine all the nutritious goodness packed onto that plate, and I loved the use of unusual ingredients too – whatever is ras el hanout dressing? Wikipedia tells me now that it is a blend of spices from North Africa – how exotic! And to be tasting this in Edinburgh! The flavours was amazing the crunchiness of the fritters and slaw well balanced by the smooth roasted squash. It also comes in a flat bread wrap if you fancy a different version!

S went for the Spiced shredded pork wrapped in Lebanese flat bread with fresh herbs and slaw (£4.40). It may not look like much (how hard is it to photograph wraps?!) but flip that pork was great. I’m pretty sure S mentioned its greatness at least 5 times over the course of our meal. And you know, sometimes it’s really great to keep things simple. No need to over-pack your wrap with a million ingredients so it falls apart in the hands of its eater – keep it simple with one key ingredient (in this case the pork) and a few subtle sides.

This is a great cafe – there’s a whole lot of stuff on the menu that I wish I could’ve tried. The drinks in the fridge also looked fun – plus you get a cute red and white straw! Although it’s not really in the ‘central’ part of Edinburgh, it’s well worth checking out. Wish I could go back soon!

Timberyard – Edinburgh, Scotland

One of our best meals of our entire January 2019 trip was probably at TIMBERYARD in Edinburgh, Scotland. Was it because the restaurant was soooo dark that we couldn’t really see our food and assumed it was good? I joke – although, it was very […]
