Found on the Redfern/Surry Hills border, Kepos Street Kitchen is a great addition to the growing number of cafes that turn into restaurants by night. J and I went for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our time in the brightly lit, open room and are keen to come back and try out the courtyard seating out the back sometime. The bathrooms are also nice – always a bonus. The staff are friendly and helpful, accommodating for my dislike of tomato and replacing it with eggplant in my salad. The counter is stacked with delicious-looking treats, although we didn’t have enough time to sample anything – we really have to come back here soon.
- What we ate:
I had the Palestinian chopped vegetable salad (which included cucumber, eggplant and onion) with mint yoghurt and herb croutons ($12) – it’s exactly what you feel like when it’s a stinking hot day and you want something that’s filling but not too heavy. J had the Steak sandwich with caramelised onion jam, wilted spinach, aioli and roasted tomatoes ($19), which also comes with some thick-cut chips (“Delish” according to J). It had the perfect balance of bread and filling (too much bread = not good), and oozing aioli is never a bad thing. In fact, J tells me: “I’m drooling thinking about it now”. We both had homemade lemonades ($4.50) which came in these cute glass jars with refreshing sprigs of mint to give it that extra kick.
