This is how I imagine my ideal life to be – always going out for nice casual lunches that serve good food that isn’t overpriced. The Mother and I tried out The Sailors Club on an impromptu lunch visit today and were wholeheartedly satisfied with our experience. Even on a cloudy day, the building (formerly housing Pier restaurant) is brightly light with windows and mirrors everywhere, and the yellow décor adds an extra zing to lift your mood.
- What we ate:
We decided to skip on entrées, although the Mother had a generous slice of Sonoma bread with Yellingbo olive oil ($2) which is always good. This was followed by the traditional Flathead in Cooper’s Batter, with chips and tartare sauce ($25). Sure, it’s expensive for fish’n’chips, but it’s also about as faultless as the dish can be (special mention to the tasty tartare). I had the Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna with zucchini done two ways (thinly sliced raw and grilled), pine nuts and lemon dressing ($24). Again a pretty much faultless dish – the tuna was tactfully only seared on one side, allowing you enjoy the raw taste as well, and the zucchini complemented the fish very well. Only the lemon dressing seemed too strong and out of place. The side of carrot with cumin and yogurt ($8) was an unexpected highlight – who knew those flavours matched so well together!
All in all, a great dining experience. The change from top-end to more casual dining has really done wonders for this place, and it’s great to see no dishes priced above $30.
